Choose To Challenge

It’s international women’s day and despite the legislation on equal pay women still lag behind when it comes to equality and equanimity. Don’t get me wrong, some things have moved in the right direction it’s just that we still have a very unfair and unequal society when it comes to gender.

We all have a conditioned mind, we believe things because that’s what we were taught, that’s what we learned and therefore until we question and challenge the way we think about the way things are, nothing will change. Boys and girls are treated differently from the moment they are born and sometimes before. With gender reveal becoming ever more popular, we could well be heading backwards rather than forwards any time soon.

Why is it so important to know the sex of a baby, to choose the “right” clothes, the “right” colours and the “right”name. Most babies look neither male nor female unless dressed in a particular way yet studies show time and again when we know the sex of a child we speak differently, we play differently, we behave differently and we offer completely different toys. It’s that powerful and that out of our awareness most of the time.

So why does it matter? It matters because the beliefs we hold about ourselves largely determine what we do in life and subsequently whether we give up on our hopes and dreams or keep going in the face of adversity pursuing them relentlessly. If we are limited by those beliefs, held back by fear of failure or success then we may never achieve our full potential or realise who we are at the deepest level.

If we truly want a more equitable society in which men and women are treated equally for who they are and the contributions they make regardless, we have to challenge the stereotypes, the thinking and the belief systems which drive them.

Energy follows thought, we can consciously choose to challenge, to question, to stand up for ourselves, our children and our young people. To stamp out the limitations put on them by the gender on their birth certificate. Sex should not be a limitation. Legislation has changed, our mindset, attitudes and willingness to lead by example must now follow.
